Death Of Upper Marlboro Man Highlights Dangers Of Drunk Driving

It is with great sadness that we talk today about the death of a 20-year-old Upper Marlboro man who was killed in a drunk driving accident just days ago. For those who have not heard yet, he was killed when another driver crossed the center line on MD 202 and collided with his vehicle head-on. Reports indicate he died at the scene.

Though police initially charged the other driver, a 31-year-old man, with drunk driving, the charges were dropped recently because prosecutors were afraid he might plead to lesser charges later on. Even though prosecutors do intend on refilling charges when the investigation is done, the release of the driver who caused the fatal car crash may not sit well with the victim's family who is likely mourning and still searching for closure.

The dangers of drinking and driving

According to MADD and their most recent statistics, drunk driving kills approximately 38 people every day in the United States. Stories like the one above are a reminder of that fact. These stories also stand as a reminder of the ultimate cost of drinking and driving. Though some drunk driving crashes can end in injury, many do not, leaving family members unsure of how to seek justice for their loved one.

We would like to remind our readers that victims of drunk driving crashes, as well as their families, may be owed compensation after a crash. This compensation can cover medical bills, future treatments, as well as funeral and burial costs in cases of fatal accidents. To seek this compensation, though, victims and/or their families may need to file a personal injury or wrongful death lawsuit.

Though taking civil action can give victims and their families a sense of justice, filing a civil claim can be a challenge if you don't understand the law. By talking to a lawyer with experience handling motor vehicle accident cases, you can get a better idea of your rights to compensation and how the law applies to your situation. They can also be incredibly valuable if a civil claim needs to go to court, as a lawyer is quite proficient in courtroom proceedings as well.
