What Training Is Required To Be A Truck Driver?

Large trucks are one of the most dangerous vehicles on Maryland roads because they are so much bigger and heavier than other vehicles on the road. If you are involved in an accident with one of these vehicles, the chances of severe injury are increased. Because of this, you may wonder exactly what training a driver must go through before he or she gets behind the wheel.

While specific training requirements may vary between trucking companies, there are some basic requirements all drivers must meet. Schneider explains that first you have to be at least 21 years old, and you need to have a commercial driver's license. This requires meeting all state requirements to obtain the license, which involves passing tests.

You would then need to go to a truck driving school. Here you will learn about safely driving a large truck, along with skills and other knowledge you will need to work as a truck driver. You will get to practice driving and learn how to maneuver your truck as well. Completing a training program is usually a requirement employers have, so you should always check with your potential employer about approved programs.

Once you have completed training and applied with a company, you will have to pass a drug and alcohol test. You will probably undergo testing throughout your employment randomly as well. Finally, you have to pass a physical to ensure that you have no health issues that could make you a liability on the roads. This information is for education and does not constitute legal advice.
