Is marijuana legalization increasing car accidents?

While marijuana for recreational use is not yet legal in Maryland, it is not too far-fetched to believe that it will be in the near future. With that in mind, there are things to learn from states where it already is completely legalized. One such learning experience states have is how marijuana affects the number of car accidents occurring.

CNN explains that there is a link between the legalization of marijuana and an increase in car accidents. In states that have legalized the drug, car accident rates have risen. However, there are conflicting reports. One study said marijuana legalization does not impact car accidents, while other studies say it does. It is a little confusing until you look at the statistics.

The statistics say car accident rates are up in states that have legalized marijuana. These statistics show the national rates and rates in states around those that have legalized the drug have not gone up. While law enforcement has some trouble proving an accident is related to marijuana use, just looking at the statistics and information does at least show a trend that the legalized of the drug correlates with an increase in car accident rates.

As more states legalize this drug, the information will increase and studies will be able to more accurately determine if legalization relates to higher accident rates. Until then, all drivers should stay safe and not drive after using drugs or alcohol. This information is for educational use only. It is not legal advice.
