The dangers of getting out of your broken down car on a busy road

A deadly two-vehicle crash to our north in Halethorpe is reminding our Upper Marlboro readers about the dangers of getting out of your vehicle after stopping on the side of a busy road. Some of you may have heard about the crash, which occurred this month when a 29-year-old man was struck by a moving vehicle after getting out of a truck to "fix something," WBAL TV said. The man reportedly died from his injuries.

Though accidents such as these are incredibly tragic and leave an entire community mourning the loss of a life, crashes like this also serve as an important reminder to drivers across Maryland about what we should do if our vehicle breaks down on the side of the road and what other drivers should do to ensure maximum safety when this happens.

As you may remember reading in the Maryland Driver's Manual when you first got your license, stopping on the side of a busy road can be incredibly dangerous, especially if you get out of your vehicle. Wind kicked up by a large commercial vehicle could knock you over, perhaps even into the path of another speeding vehicle. If you aren't pulled over far enough on the side of the road, your vehicle could be struck as well, causing injury to you or others.

Just as there are rules you should follow when your car breaks down, there are rules other drivers need to follow as well such as moving to an available lane further away from a disabled vehicle or reducing speed when this is not possible. Even small things like this can help prevent a fatal accident from occurring here in Upper Marlboro or elsewhere in the state.
