What are the signs of nursing home neglect?

One of the most emotional and difficult decisions a person can face is the decision to place a loved one in the care of others. To trust that your family members will be well taken care of, and their health and well-being made a priority is a lot of trust to place in nursing home staff. You have every right to expect a reasonable standard of care for those you love. Sometimes, unfortunately, that trust is misplaced.

While the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene in Maryland proactively seeks to provide the best possible care by taking part in programs such as the 'Advancing Excellence in America's Nursing Homes' campaign, there are still many instances of nursing home neglect reported every day. What is frightening is the potential number of cases that aren't reported. Many times, the residents of a nursing home are unable or simply don't want to speak out about the neglect as they don't want to get anyone into trouble or make things worse for themselves.

There are several signs to watch for in the case of suspected nursing home neglect. Some things you may notice which are common signs of neglect are unexplained injuries, dehydration, emotional agitation or sudden withdrawal and not communicating with you, infections, rapid weight loss or gain, pressure ulcers (bedsores), an unexplained fall, unsanitary conditions and many other signs. If you suspect there is a problem go with your gut and investigate.

If you suspect neglect is taking place in a long-term care facility, you should immediately obtain the advice of an experienced personal injury attorney. They will help you fight on behalf of those in care to ensure your personal injury claim against the nursing home is properly represented for the best possible outcome in a very difficult time.
